Of course you’ve heard of genetic modification, but have you really considered the risk? Is the splicing of two genes together to enhance the attributes of a specific plant or animal a wise and resposible act. The question is, will this practice have negative effects on the world’s ecosystems and your health? Here are some thoughts on the negative aspects of genetic modification.
No Long Term Testing – The fact is, these livestock or poultry products that have been genetically modified have not been submitted to long term testing. This would clear up the facts that these products may have effects on you after 3-4 years of regular or non-regular consumption. It is necessary because the public is not sure if these products would have an effect on their health with a year or two on their consumption. These might cause long-term diseases to us and may affect our body in unknown ways. It may even affect the health of pregnant women or even worse, the babies they are carrying. All of the negative possibilities of the long term effects of these genetically modified foods are too risky to be just ignored.
Allergen usage – Another possibility is that an allergen may have been used in splicing the gene. Allergens are foreign invaders to our body that cause allergies. Allergens like eggs or sheep extract may have been used for the splicing so how can you know if this genetically modified food has used a gene that you are allergic to. So if you are suddenly allergic to meat when you have never been, there is a high chance is that it’s been genetically modified.
New diseases – Genetically modified food uses genes that are spliced and what if one of these are infected by a natural, non-life threatening disease? The genetic modification could make a hybrid disease that would cause an epidemic. This a very delicate process, and a simple miscalculation could have devastating effects. It might create a a new super virus out of a simple, already existing disease
So, to be sure about what you are eating, eat only natural food. There may be some advantages to genetic modification but the scope of negative possiblities are staggering. True, genetic modification can improve the shelf life, tolerance to weather conditions, and yeild of poultry or livestock. But the problem is, we don’t know what the effect of all this will be to the masses eating these GMO products! Nobody may be ever sure of the effects of these new products to human health, except maybe when it’s too late! A genetically modified chicken is not the same as a regular chicken. Animals that are genetically modified are absolutely new and don’t fit within the standards of nature. So don’t just trust genetically modified products that are said to be safe and doesn’t have any adverse effects.
Be safe, say no to GMO and eat all natural products!
