Buying fish and seafood can be quite a challenge. I know this from personal experience. How about you? Have you ever done your best to buy the freshest looking product you could and then get disappointed when you unwrapped or tasted your meal? I sure have. This will never be the case when you buy fron High Arctic Seafoods & Steaks.
First off, we only sell all natural, all wild, ocean caught products. Then, all of our fish and seafoods are flash frozen, locking in all the flavour, texture and freshness that we all love and enjoy. If that’s not enough… we then, deliver these awesome products right to your front door! That’s right! WE DELIVER.
But, if you want to go through the whole gambit… here are a few tips to help you pick out the freshest products.
If you’re buying a whole fish.
- Look for bright, clear eyes. The eyes fade quickly into gray dullness. Dull-eyed fish may be safe to eat, but they are past their best.
- Next look at the fish. Is it shiny? Does it look metallic and clean? Or is it dull or discolored? If so, it is less than great.
- Smell it. A fresh fish should smell like clean water, or a touch briny. Never buy a nasty smelling fish. Cooking won’t make it any better.
- Look at the gills. They should be a rich red. If the fish is old, they will turn the color of faded brick.
Choosing fresh fish fillets
- Look for bright flesh. Fish fade as they age. If the fillet still has skin, that skin should look as brilliant as the skin on an equally good whole fish – shiny and metallic.
- Smell it. The smell test is very important with fish fillets. They should have no strong aromas.
- Is there liquid on the meat? If so, that liquid should be clear, not milky. Milky liquid on a fillet is the first stage of rot.
- If the fishmonger lets you, press the meat with your finger. It should be resilient enough so your indentation disappears. If your fingerprint remains, move on.
Your best bet is to make friends with the fishmonger and find out when the new shipments arrive. Plan on being there to meet it and buy then.
Or… just give us a call and have us bring the freshest products right to your front door! We want to be your friendly fish monger.
